I was diagnosed with epilepsy at 21 years of age and fluctuated between many medications. When I decided to have a child, at the age of 31, I was on three medications and having nocturnal seizures. I did not have any difficulty getting pregnant. The only symptom I was aware of related to my medications, was the chance of a cleft palate at birth. There wasn’t much research on my other medications but I decided to have a baby. I was very scared. I would love my baby no matter what but did not want to be the cause of any health issues. I was considered high risk during my pregnancy and had monthly check-ups. I continued to have nocturnal seizures and my doctor at the time would just alternate my medication dosages. I did have gestational diabetes but overall I had a pretty easy pregnancy. My son was born only two weeks early, gave me 32 hours of labor but was born nice and healthy!
6 months after having my son, I had a grand mal seizure and began to see a new doctor. He told me he couldn’t believe how many medications doctors switched me through throughout the years. He decided to try Onfi with me but said if it didn’t work it was time to consider surgery.
Well, this doctor changed my life. After 11 years of suffering I finally found something that worked. I have been seizure free for 8 years now. I consider my son my miracle baby. Onfi changed my life; however when I started it it had just recently become cleared to use in the United States. It is considered an addictive drug and if taken during pregnancy can harm the baby. Three is also the chance the baby could be born with the addiction. My choice was to stay on Onfi and stay seizure free; however, although I had planned on having more children, I did not want to take that risk. At times, I feel guilty because I always wanted my child to have siblings but he is the greatest blessing I could have ever been given and the most loving son any mother could ever have.
I had no problems during the pregnancy, or during birth. The problem was after birth. I had extreme clotting, and bleeding. If memory serves me right about 6 weeks after birth I had to have a DNC due to the bleeding which I always thought was due to the medication I was on, but the Doctors never did say, and I was a dumb 18 year old who did not know to ask, or know that seizure meds could cause bleeding.
Once I got that cleared up everything went like clockwork.

I was considered a high-risk pregnancy from the beginning and was referred to an speciality OB at a hospital that had a trauma unit and a NICU. My local GYN said it was best to go there so that if anything would happen me and my baby wouldn’t be separated. My first ultrasound was at 16 weeks. Monthly after that, I went for fetal ultrasounds and monitoring so that my Dr could watch for and detect if any fetal distress was ever present. allows. This monitoring also monitored my baby’s organ development, especially his brain function. My doctor always monitored my lab work and blood pressure to try and make sure I didn’t have a seizure while pregnant. We talked about the delivery and how hard that would be on my body. I really wanted to try for a vaginal delivery. At 37 weeks my blood pressure spiked and I was admitted to be induced. I was given Cervidil vaginally to induce vs. Potosin. My doctor said Potosin was not good for someone with epilepsy. But after 76 hours of trying to be induced, my dr advised a C-section and my son was born healthy.

My 1st I had over 30 gran mals with (tonic clonic seizures). I was so scared to lose him each and every time. When I would go to hospital acting like they didn’t care about it/ it wasn’t a big deal. My son will be 3 in March 2026. He is level 2 autistic. My son did come out needing help with oxygen. He was also very lethargic due to medication! My 2nd I have seizures everyday(smaller seizures) and I had 3 gran mals with her but more so my smaller seizures were so severe.. She needed help with some oxygen as well when she came out. She was also very lethargic but she was more lethargic than my son was and she just would sleep… she’s 4 months now and she’s healthy! Overall my babies are healthy and I am so blessed and thankful for them! My 2nd I had to also go un medicated due to they could not find my spine.. they pricked my back and moving the needle all around and gave up because I screamed about a long needle being poked to many times and moving it all around like it’s a small needle. Well they said they couldn’t find my spine due to the lamtragine. My 1st baby I had the epidural. My 2nd nothing. I almost went into a tonic clonic seizure during birth due to the stress on my body. Luckily I did not!

I was advised to change my diet during pregnancy, close to a Keto one. I believe this helped my seizures. It’s often advised for children with epilepsy or those with drug resistant epilepsy. I was given many extra scans during pregnancy including at 34 weeks a scan actually on my daughter’s brain within the womb. This is due to my epilepsy being caused by a brain condition. It was a scary time but I advise anyone to do so if offered and to also ask for extra scans.
If your seizures are much higher just before and during your period time (mine are hugely triggered with hormones) this may be a trigger during pregnancy or possibly like for me be a time of less seizures. My seizures were the least they’ve ever been during pregnancy and then increased again after. I only had 2 tonic clonics during pregnancy. They believe this was because my hormones were highly increased but stable after the first 12 weeks.
My last tonic clonic during pregnancy I managed to have my hands around my tummy and did break my nose but i think due the adrenaline I refused pain meds when they pushed it back.
I requested a planned C-section which I believe was the best decision I made. There is no worry of having a seizure during the hours of labour. If you want that then push. After pregnancy it healed well even after tonic clonic seizures soon after.

I had seizures still during my pregnancy. I think the most frustrating part of it all was the lack of knowledge from my OBGYN. They made it feel like my case was so uncommon. If i had a seizure they would consistently say “thats for your neurologist to know”, why wouldn't they care to know? Also the lack of communication between both teams even though they were the same company.

Trough bloodwork was done before getting pregnant to help understand where a “safe level” of medicine was for me during pregnancy. Bloodwork was done monthly and if levels dipped below what was safe my dosage was increased. Tapering was quick post-delivery, but I am still on a slightly higher dose of 1 medication for extra coverage in the newborn stage while facing sleep deprivation, stress, etc.

I took Lamotrigine throughout both of my pregnancies. My neurologist from the Mayo Clinic said it’s the safest seizure medication for pregnancies. I still had seizures throughout my pregnancies and he would go up every time I had a seizure so by the end of my second pregnancy I was getting dizzy so I said no more kids. My frist baby I started to take epilepsy I have 4 kids today all healthy I had lot off epilepsy with my pregnancy but that medication help me
I'm a 30 year old mum to a beautiful 4 year old daughter.
I was diagnosed with epilepsy aged 13 from the start I was advised if I wanted children I should plan for them, as I was told I had higher chances of them having conditions such as down syndrome and cleft lip.
In 2019 myself and my boyfriend decided to plan having a child we decided because of all the planning tests extra scans tests during the pregnancy I only wanted 1.
In 2021 I fell pregnant with my daughter (she had until her due date/hospital appointment until we gave up). Unfortunately it was the pandemic. We was treated well and yes I had to have extra tests, scans etc and all the way though baby was perfect. However during this time all the information I was given was US based (I live in the UK) which then scared me as how can I trust a system I know nothing about. So from then on I had to trust my gut, from the information I've been given over the years.
Thankfully everything went well until I had to have this glucose test thing. I had an experience I've never had before I passed out during this test, again everything was fine.
I didn't have a seizure at all throughout my pregnancy. Longest time ever.
My labour was simple although I was told to possibly be prepared for a c-section but it wasn't needed. I don't remember much in all honesty.
She's now 4, happy, healthy and an attitude to match the family.
It's not as scary as you might think
I think the best advice I was given was to plan, plan, plan. Then you can have all angles covered. So that's my advice to you

My child was only 1 pound till 5 month then my baby started to gain more weight as we had been checking weekly as It looked like my baby had a whole in her heart. As some kids can get cleft lips. Taking Trokendi XR (topiramate) while pregnant can increase the risk of birth defects like cleft lip and/or palate, smaller-than-average size at birth, and potentially neurodevelopmental problems. The drug can also pass into breast milk, causing potential side effects in nursing infants such as diarrhea and drowsiness.
My baby at 8 months was full size. Honestly still breastfeeding and the most healthiest thing for my child, is doing amazing. At 2.5 years breastfeeding my child the doctor has supported my and my child. The child has been allergic to every milk out there lactose milk as been the only milk thats not allergic reaction.
Being a mother with seizures I have a very supported husband.
I now take trokendi xr 400mg because breastfeeding and my weight take in account always asks your neurologist, to test for how much you need. Cuz, you don't need to overdose or be underdosed. It makes a huge difference.I had a seizures a year ago.

Approximately 1 month after the first one, I had another severe one and quit breathing again and was hospitalized put on a baby monitor for 3 days.
Thankfully most of the rest of the pregnancy itself was safe, til we got to my 36hr labor/delivery. They were so scared I was going to have a seizure and crush him, that by the time he did come, I had 6 epidurals and couldn't even feel the pressure to push.

I was more fearful of what could happen than what actually happened. Before I even started trying, I met with my neurologist and discussed my fears. She explained the medication I’m already taking is about the safest I can be on to be pregnant and it would be more dangerous for me and the baby if I went off medication. I stayed on my medication but they changed up the dosage based on my levels. They checked my levels every few weeks all the way through the pregnancy.

I was blessed. My pregnancy went really well. I have Focal and Catamenial (Hormone) Epilepsy and my body/brain was happy with the rise in Progesterone. Due to seizures being triggered by stress (I get Grand mal seizures) my neurologist arranged with my OBGYN for me to have induced labor so that they both can be there at the birth and that I can be monitored. I requested epidural for pain management because pain is a "stresser". So I felt no pain. The labor went well and my baby girl is healthy.

I have had seizures since I was 10 and have always been on multiple medications. I was followed closely by a Dr. through my pregnancies I was taking 300mg twice a day of lamictal 175mg of lyrica twice a day, metoprolol 50MG twice a day and Amitriptyline 50MG twice a day. They increased my medication through out my pregnancy to make sure I wasn’t going to have seizures. They only thing my Dr said about Lamictal is that it could cause the baby to have a cleft palate but both my kids are fine with no side effects of my medications.
I did not find out I was pregnant until I was already 15 weeks. I had no complications during my pregnancy, and my little girl was born perfectly healthy 7 pounds 0.3 ounces.
This was my 2nd pregnancy and 1st with levetracetam. In both pregnancies 2nd trimester was the worst, with this pregnancy having 1 tonic clonic seizure a week in this period. When I started to take the medication morning, noon and night (lamotrogine morning and noon, levtracetam at night) the hormone effects and seizures reduced significantly. Spreading them out seemed to work more effectively than the usual twice daily recommendation.
fairly easy pregnancy, no morning sickness. I was again advised to have an induction if I went beyond my due date. that was scheduled for the day before my due date, although I think labor would have started close to that anyway; I had lost the mucus plug the day before the induction. Baby girl, 8lbs 5oz.
She's now four, on the smaller side around 25th percentile growth charts, but she dr isn't concerned as she's staying along her growth chart and growing. She knows all her letters and can count to 35.
I had a fairly easy pregnancy, no morning sickness, no breakthrough seizures. wasn't expecting this pregnancy, so didn't take the folic acid until after I knew I was pregnant. I only needed one appointment with maternal fetal medicine, that dr cleared me to continue with my local OBGYN. OB recommended an induction at 39 weeks because of potential additional complications if pre-eclampsia (increased seizure risk for general population) were to happen; and the longer the pregnancy goes on the higher the chances of pre-eclampsia. No gestational diabetes, no pre-eclampsia. Baby boy born 8lb 5oz, about 19 inches.

Being pregnant while managing epilepsy with lamotrigine was both challenging and rewarding. I started my pregnancy taking 100 mg in the morning and 100 mg at night, but as my body went through hormonal changes, my neurologist closely monitored my lamotrigine levels with monthly blood draws. Over time, my dosage had to be gradually increased up to 250 mg.
The higher dose left me more tired than usual, and my memory took a noticeable hit, which sometimes made day-to-day life harder. Still, I reminded myself daily that these adjustments were to keep both me and my baby safe.
In the end, all the effort and careful monitoring paid off — my sweet baby girl was born healthy, and that’s what mattered most.
If you have epilepsy and are planning to get pregnant, the most important first step is to talk to your neurologist. They can help find the safest medication and dosage for you and your baby, ensuring you both have the best possible start.

I dealt with a very small sub chorionic hematoma in my first trimester, it resolved quickly and I was not placed on pelvic rest or bed rest in regards to the hematoma. I had hyperemisis gravidarum in this pregnancy and that effectively kept me home bound and unable to work or even drive. I had to schedule my entire life around this condition and had a short list of safe foods I could eat. I lost 20lbs in pregnancy before I finally started gaining weight like I needed to. My daughter was born at just over 39 weeks, after 28 hours of labor. I was not induced, but I was given pitocin in labor because contractions stalled soon after I was admitted. I did not take an epidural, but I did take Benadryl in my IV and I did also allow a dose of IV pain medication after being started on a higher dose of pitocin, in hopes of being able to sleep some since I was already severely sleep deprived and sleep deprivation is a trigger for me. Hospital staff almost caused me to seize in labor because they refused me my meds for several hours. My daughter weighed 7lbs and 7.8 ounces, and was 20&1/2 inches in length. APGAR scores were normal but she displayed jaundice within the first few hours after birth. My daughter screamed essentially non stop for hours at a time, classifying her as a colicky baby. I slept in 1/2 hour intervals until she was at least 6-9 months of age. Her birth is still considered to be a big source of trauma for me. I developed severe postpartum depression and anxiety and I struggled to bond with my daughter. I still believe that my experience would have been different had the hospital not been determined to try to coerce me into a C-section simply because of my epilepsy even though I was not symptomatic or at risk. I managed to have a vaginal delivery, without epidural, in spite of their attempts.
NobleValley830 Aug, 2025ZdroweKeppra xr
I gauged timing of my medication dosing to when I had the least amount of heart burn and nausea. This pregnancy had a few small hiccups but these are things I don’t feel were due to me being epileptic or on medication for my epilepsy. The issues I had in pregnancy were a sub chorionic hemorrhage and a low lying placenta which was initially classified as a borderline placenta previa/placenta previa marginalis/marginal previa. I was placed on modified bed rest/pelvic rest and had extra ultrasounds throughout my pregnancy. Bed rest lasted until the bleed subsided and also until it was confirmed that the growth of my uterus shifted the placenta far enough from the cervix to allow for a safe vaginal birth.
My son was born without complications. My labor was less than 12 hours in duration and the only medication in my system was my epilepsy medication. I had an unmedicated birth. Spontaneous vaginal delivery. He was born full term at 40 weeks, on his due date. He was 9lbs 1ounce in weight, and 21&1/2 inches in length. Head circumference was appropriate, and I will note that he was large as a result of genetics (I am tall and so is his father), I did not gain too much weight in pregnancy and I did not have gestational diabetes or insulin resistance issues. I chose to labor at home until I was in transition (dilated to around 8cm) and upon admission to the hospital it took less than an hour for him to arrive. He was born on hands and knees and cried immediately. His APGAR scores were perfect and he latched to nurse well within his first hour.
We had to put cushions all around the front room because of how frequent my seizures became, I smashed out my front teeth but my baby was fine. My children are now 14 & 13. My youngest has ADHD though im not sure if thats anything to do with medication.

I took myself off the levatirecetam when I got pregnant the first time, I rolled onto my back in my sleep 8 months pregnant and the lack of oxygen to my brain from the pressure of the baby on my vena cava triggered a grand mal seizure. I came around with a bitten tongue and numb tingly legs and a rash on my eyelids and neck. Luckily I could still feel the baby kicking afterwards and everything was successful with birth. During the second pregnancy I stayed on levatirectitam 750mg twice a day the entire time and had no seizures and had a perfectly healthy baby boy the second time too.
I am having 3-5 spacial seizures a week that makes me forget everything. My whole pregnancy though it actually stopped them. I seen a high risk doctor, which im sure all of you will as well. And it was very important to keep them. Now after my pregnancy my body did some kind of change, obviously through the whole pregnancy phase, and I ended up having one that ended up with me being in the hospital for 3 days. But a side note dont listen to doctors who tell you you cant breast feed. I was told by the one I had that I wasnt allowed to. Then I got pregnant with a second and was asked why I didn't and explained and he said you do know what your baby is swimming in and absorbing in your stomach right? He told me it would have been perfectly fine. My pregnancy was high-risk, but I was healthy throughout. I stayed in very close contact with my epileptologist. However, after my son was born, my doctor cut my dosage in half for fear that after my hormones dropped I would have negative side effects. I had no control over the dosage, because I was a hospital patient, despite being unsure if it was a high enough dosage for me. I had a partial seizure with hallucinations a few days after birth. My son was in the NICU, and I had extra stress, which likely did not help. I also had gained weight, which probably did not help either. Luckily, I was in the hospital so was able to get a blood draw ASAP. I immediately added another 100mg. My son is 3.5 years old now, and I have stayed at 700mg since. At my most recent blood draw a few months ago, my levels are still right in the middle.

This pregnancy was my second and completely unexpected. I was approximately 12 weeks pregnant at my first kiddos birthday. Again I was not aware that anti epileptic medications decreased the efficacy of birth control. This pregnancy was a healthy pregnancy with a healthy birth epidural and all. I did have a few seizures during this pregnancy but I had a one year old that didn’t sleep also. She is two now and our only problem has again been ear infections but ear tubes fixed the problem. She is appropriate developmentally for a two year old. Walks, talks and plays with all the other children. She is a fast learner and knows what buttons to press. I personally have had more trouble after this pregnancy. Around 9 months I began having more seizures than I’ve ever had however I had many large life stressors that could have been a huge cause as well. Two children under two is no joke also!
My first little one will be four soon. I had a great pregnancy and normal birthing experience, epidural and all. At the time it was not widely known that anti epileptic medications decreased the efficacy of birth control. Luckily I was already taking the folic acid that is recommended for women of child bearing age. I had been seizure free for about a year at the time of this pregnancy and remained seizure free until about three or four months after baby was born. She will be four soon and so far has met all her “milestones” and is what I would consider a normal kid. She is active, makes friends, talks non stop and her only true problem has been ear infections but that runs in the family.

I had a healthy pregnancy and maintained seizure free. I did have high blood pressure at 39 weeks and opted for a repeat csection, which went incredibly well.

I had a healthy & uncomplicated pregnancy and maintained seizure freedom. Other than my baby's hernia (which was very easily corrected and didn't impact his overall health or development) he had no problems.

Choruję na epilepsję uogólnioną. Ataki wystepują do 3 razy w roku.

Warto robić stężenie leku we krwi. Przyrost wagi daje swoje i hormony również.
Warto robic wszystkie badania

Could also be due to some childhood trauma with father.

This was my third child . Previous pregnancies were without medicines.
I was Misdiagnosed with epilepsy for 20 years. Diagnosed from 2004-2024. Last pregnancy was 2006-2007.
I was advised to continue with meds throughout my pregnancy but I refused. Lmp was Sept 1 , 2006 and medication was stopped on Nov 3, 2006.
I was not informed about any complications during pregnancy other than gestational diabetes and was advised to lower my sugar intake because baby was expected to be large. He was born at 4lbs 14 oz @ full term, quite unexpected weight wise. I didn't learn about IUGR until last year , when I requested his medical records , it was written in these records.
His little body looked twisted. His chest was pointing outward in the center and his head was tilted. I was told it was just the way he was lying in the womb and would look better once he gained some weight. I took him to my family doctor on many occasions asking him why he looked out of portion and his head was bulging behind one ear and caved behind the other. I was told I need to rotate him from side to side . This went on for months and months. Finally, we were sent to a specialist, who informed me that we could have a helmet made for him but it would be chained to the ceiling during the night ! We were misled about this treatment and therefore we refused.
We believe our son was born with scoliosis although it wasn't diagnosed until he was 10. We were also told that his curve was 58 degrees right up until corrective surgery. This was another lie. His records show that his curve was above 84-90 degrees. Very severe scoliosis.
He is almost 18 years old now and graduating high school next month. He struggled all the way through school from being teased to learning difficulties.
He also has insulin resistance and a fatty liver.
From what I learned in my research from tegretol exposure to a fetus is that you do not need to take tegretol during the whole pregnancy as the most damage is done within the first trimester.
We love our presious boy, he has a heart of gold . He loves to laugh and make you laugh even harder. life can be hard sometimes but you just learn to go with the flow. I just wish that moms like me had better doctors, mine was crap.

Każdej z Was życzę spokojnego przebiegu ciąży i połogu oraz radości z macierzyństwa i maluszków. :)

In the 1st trimester I took levetiracetam (Normeg), I got to 1500-0-1500. In addition, clonazepam 0.5mg when I had aura (about 5 times a month), attacks intensified during pregnancy, in the 3rd trimester I took Oxepilax, I got to 450-0-450. The child was born by cesarean section in the 38th week (doctors were afraid to risk a natural birth), got an Apgar scale of 7,7,8,9, in the 4th month low muscle tone was diagnosed, we went to rehabilitation - exercises, such physiotherapy to help the child move. Later everything is fine and on time, he is developing according to expectations.
